David Sedaris is funnier than your three favorite standup comics put together. If you haven't heard his name, it's because he doesn't do TV, outside of the occasional Letterman appearance. Or maybe it's because he's not a comedian ...
Sedaris is an essayist. To my mind, he's the essayist. He's a literary Larry David, a demigod of sardonicism. He spins childhood embarrassment and social hypocrisy into linguistic gold. And on April 30, he's coming to Clark County Library to spin aloud.
Sedaris' book readings are often compared to rock concerts. Having been to one, I can vouch. The guy's got more fans than the Strip's got escort cards. And these fans show up to his events, year after year, because he always delivers.
Sedaris will no doubt read from his upcoming book of animal fables, (Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary, due Oct. 5), then field questions about his boyfriend, Hugh, his sister Amy (the one from Strangers with Candy), and his anti-fairytale life in France.
The best reason not to go: It'll spoil you for all other book readings.
