Local Music: One bluesy Rose

Local singer/songwriter Walker Rose gave the Beauty Bar a taste of the blues last Saturday night, opening for local acts Wyatt McKenzie and The Seams. Those who hadn’t heard Rose—formerly of the band Walker Rose and the Pines—were in for a surprise watching his first solo performance. Paired with an acoustic guitar, the lanky blond howled with intensity, not unlike Tom Waits or Man Man’s Honus Honus. Rose’s “Red Moon Tide,” in particular, brought a darker edge to the blues. “Half of the songs I’m playing aren’t even finished,” Rose says. “I’m kinda winging it. [It] kinda forces me to improv a little.” The Vegas local plans to move to Seattle next year, where, he says, he’ll work on finishing and recording songs. Influenced by artists like Howlin’ Wolf, Rose says the blues is definitely a conviction.
