“We’ve got the green light,” says Lisa Pittman, owner/promoter/DJ of CandyBar Saturdays (“for women who like women”) at the Krave Lounge. Her new lesbian night, Down, celebrates its grand opening way atop the Palms at Ghostbar on March 25.
A collaboration with female promoter Rachel Wenman—of Cherry’s Cherry Bomb Wednesday indie-night fame—the monthly party brings a lesbian-focused event to the mid-week party schedule. While CandyBar Saturdays bring in just 30 percent locals, according to Pittman, she says Down will fulfill the need for a non-weekend event within the partygoing lesbian community.
Similar to her role at CandyBar, Pittman will both DJ and run the floor, while Wenman manages the vibe at this, the first recurring lesbian party in a mainstream casino club. The grand opening will feature a live performance by God-Dess & She, well known for contributing to the L Word soundtrack. Cover: $5-$10 for ladies, $20 for gents, locals free with RSVP.
To Pittman, the timing couldn’t have been more perfect for Down to arrive on the scene, socially and economically. “What opened the doors for the gay community, ironically, was the recession. Once the ‘straight’ money stopped, [the casinos] opened their doors to other kinds of money.” As for Down’s tagline, “You gotta get up to get Down,” Pittman says: “I thought of that at like 4 in the morning and cracked myself up.”
