Holding a fundraiser in 110-degree heat on the tarred patios behind the Arts Factory in the hellish sun of July seemed a bit risky. Yet around 350 people attended the Contemporary Arts Center’s first Beer Fest (co-sponsored by Las Vegas Weekly) last Saturday, buying a $20 ticket for access to specialty beers from local breweries and distributors, and the chance to hear live music and watch old films. The $5,000-plus raised will go toward gallery operations and exhibition expenses for the 20-year-old nonprofit’s next show, Emily Kennerk’s America’s #1 Foreclosed City: Las Vegas, which runs August 3 through September 18. The CAC, hit hard by the economy, has been operating on a shoestring budget—but pushing forward with stellar programming, new partnerships and a lengthy list of volunteers. The Beer Fest drew a lot of new faces Downtown. Gallery director Wendy Kveck said many attendees were first-timers to the CAC and the Arts Factory.
