Five reasons you might wanna see Devo

Sure the costumes are cool, but Devo can play, too.

1) To get your first look inside Crown Theater. The Rio's new venue—one-time home to Club Rio and Prince's 3121 residency—has been open as a nightclub since late May, but Devo kicks off the 900-capacity room's concert-hosting existence.

June 19, 8 p.m., $79. Crown Theater

2) Because Crown's circular interior has been walled with more than 4,000 square feet of video screenage. And we can't think of many bands more deserving of multimedia attention

3) Devo can actually play. I'd always thought of Mothersbaugh, Casale and the rest as synth-loving, energy-domed goofballs. Then I saw them tear it up, musically, at Coachella in April.

4) There's more to Devo's catchy catalog than "Whip It." Even if you don't know 'em already, you might leave singing "Gates of Steel," "Girl U Want" or "Freedom of Choice."

5) Local electronicists Afghan Raiders open, so skip that pre-show nap you had planned and get there on time.
