Whiskey Revival: a cover band with a kick
Wed, Jun 16, 2010 (4:50 p.m.)
Whiskey Revival
Meet Whiskey Revival. More like get reacquainted. The cover band’s six members are already familiar faces on the local music scene. Vocalist Paige Overton is best known for fronting popular country folksters The Clydesdale, while vocalist Andrew Morris, drummer Jon Whisenant and bassist Alex LeCavalier share a stage together in Irish-pub cover group Darby O’Gill and the Little People. Lead guitarist Matt James plays with jam band Cherry Hill, and pedal-steel player Thom Ferman is a member of rockabilly outfit Jaxy & The 357s. Those distinct styles meshed together might sound like a strange cup of tea, but it actually makes for one solid shot of Whiskey.
What kinda Revival?: Breathing new life into classic country—we’re talking the ’70s and prior (think Patsy Cline and Waylon Jennings). “These songs are already established as hits,” Overton explains, “so it’s kind of fun to have your own take on something that already made its way into the world.”
Stomping grounds: Whiskey Revival has the next two Sunday nights—June 20 and 27—lined up at Club Fortune Casino (725 S. Racetrack Road) from 4-8 p.m. The group’s ultimate goal is to hit the casinos. “We’d like to play on the Strip more than anything,” Overton says. “You have more of a chance to fall on some ears that weren’t expecting you to be there ... [but] right now we’re testing the waters.”
Why get busier?: Whiskey Revival’s members—particularly Overton, who already has a side project, solo lounge act Paige of Spades—all have plenty on their musical to-do list. Guess there’s no such thing as too many gigs. “This gives me the outlet to have fun with the charming country music that I love so much,” Overton explains. “And it’s way better than karaoke.”
