The Big Friendly Corporation, …And So It Goes

Leading off the zany liner-note thank-you list (Tony Clifton, fun-size Snickers bars, unicorns) that accompanies The Big Friendly Corporation’s latest album: the Pinball Hall of Fame. Laugh all you want, but the pinball mecca seriously ought to consider playing the hell out of …And So It Goes inside its East Trop location, and not just as a form of reciprocation.

The BFC’s power-pop confections sound as if they’ve been packed in ice since the coin-operated late 1970s or at least the roller-rink-dominated early ’80s. That’s not say they feel dated; like The New Pornographers or The Apples in Stereo, Big Friendly understands how best to bring the past into the present, even if the band lyrically laments that “records still sound better than CDs.”

As slick as the production might be, however, the disc never quite offers the warmth of the Vegas fivesome’s animated live show, which was on brilliant display at January’s Aruba release party. Perhaps next time, this Corporation should follow its heart and invest in vinyl.
