Mark Huff, Feels Like California
The Details
Las Vegas expatriate Mark Huff has been living and working in Nashville since 2003, but he’s still an honorary member of the local music scene. The singer-songwriter’s latest album, Feels Like California, doesn’t deviate from his rootsy, retro template, and as such it’s a little bland and underwhelming, although songs like “One Light” and “Change Your Name” are catchy enough. Best not to pay close attention to the lyrics, though, which tend toward the insipid (the low point being the dopey “Only Birds Are Free”).
There’s something appealing about Huff’s dogged consistency, and old-school local-music fans will get something out of California, even if it’s just a nostalgia buzz. It’s the kind of thing you won’t much notice playing in the background, but you won’t feel the need to turn off, either.
