One meal: El Segundo Sol

Ceviche

Photo: Katherine Fernelius

Mexican food can be a little daunting for the calorie-conscious — all that cheese, tortillas and margarita mix. But at El Segundo Sol, now open at the Fashion Show Mall, being mindful is not as hard as it seems.

With a Skinny Margarita ($9.95), chips and three salsas ($2.95) and fresh ceviche ($11.95), I didn't do half bad in terms of calories. (It's a different story for the wallet-wary.)

Restaurant Guide

The chips and salsa were typical, but the ceviche was fantastic. Chunks of ahi tuna, tomatoes, avocado and cucumber, garnished with radish and a dash of agave nectar — it was a perfect blend.

Calorie-counting or not, I just had to try the tres leches cake — vanilla cake, a rich layer of caramel, topped with whipped cream and submerged in milk. If you're going to be bad, be bad with this. You won't regret it; I didn't.

Because of the prices, I may not be back too often for dinner. But I'll be there for happy hour — especially if that cake is on the menu.
