Five things I wrote in my notebook during The Hold Steady show

The Hold Steady
-Headliners on at 8:18? Too freaking early for a rock show. (Guess they’ve gotta clear out early for the almighty Steel Panther.)
-Oy, Vegas. Couple hundred people here, maybe. $25 seems fair for tix. Economy? Too much competition tonight? Sheer laziness? I’m circling D, all of the above.
-Crowd energy was 10 times better when they played Beauty Bar, but no Downtown patio can match this crystalline sound. Think I just heard guitarist Tad Kubler’s stomach growl.
-I miss Franz Nicolay. Stage right cries out for his newsboy cap and handlebar mustache.
-Singer Craig Finn obviously sees it’s empty in here, yet he’s livelier than ever. Maybe if even fewer folks show up next time, he’ll actually stage-dive into our pit of lameness.
