Asian superstars are bringing business to the Strip
Tue, Nov 23, 2010 (4:10 p.m.)
Asian superstar Stefanie Sun is set to take the stage at Wynn Las Vegas Dec. 24-25.
Stefanie Sun, Coco Lee, Aaron Kwok—haven’t heard of ’em?
They’re famous entertainers. They sell tons of albums and DVDs, and they’ve all played Vegas in the past year. Here’s the catch: Sun, Lee and Kwok are superstars in Asia. They perform at the Wynn, but the property doesn’t advertise their shows in English-language newspapers or on English TV channels. The Wynn doesn’t need to; these performers fill up the Encore Theater with Clark County’s Asian-language-speaking residents. The Wynn also offers special room rates to Asian travelers who fly in for the concerts.
Approximately 8 percent of Clark County’s residents identify as Asian-Americans. Many of them moved here from Southern California, and within the past decade, the county’s Asian population has nearly doubled, dramatically increasing the demand for Asian performers.
The Encore Theater isn’t the only venue to fill this demand. The MGM Grand welcomes Asian entertainers during Chinese New Year (celebrated in January or February) and Christmas. And when the Filipino variety show Wowowee played the Thomas & Mack, more than 14,000 Filipino fans came to watch.
So maybe Vegas should stop worrying about Macau and Asia stealing our business, and maybe Asia should worry about us stealing theirs.
With world-class dining, shopping, spas, golf and entertainment, there's no shortage of things to do at Wynn. The resort’s aquatic acrobatic show, “Le Reve—The Dream,” a creation by Cirque Du Soleil veteran Franco Dragone and Steve Wynn, will leave guests wanting more with its breathtaking performances that conjure an imaginary world. The Wynn Esplanade offers a unique shopping experience with stores including Chanel, Manolo Blahnik, Christian Dior, Oscar de la Renta and many more. Tryst is its signature nightclub, offering a secluded lagoon inside the club and spacious dance floor. Blush, the Wynn’s ultra lounge, draws swanky party-goers. Tryst, Wynn’s signature nightclub, is situated along a private lagoon under a 90-foot waterfall and plays host to some of the world’s most renown DJs.
MGM Grand, a AAA Four Diamond resort, offers 5,044 rooms and suites.
MGM Grand features KÀ by Cirque du Soleil; Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club; and world-class entertainment at the Grand Garden Arena and Hollywood Theatre.
The resort offers signature restaurants by celebrity chefs including Tom Colicchio’s Craftsteak, Emeril Lagasse’s New Orleans Fish House, Wolfgang Puck’s Bar & Grill and Michelin three star and Forbes Five Star restaurant, Joël Robuchon.
As part of its ongoing “Grand Renovation,” MGM Grand has remodeled all rooms and suites in its main tower and is adding several new experiences to its lineup including Hakkasan Las Vegas Restaurant and Nightclub, a new upscale dining/nightlife concept (coming in April 2013).
MGM Grand also features a state-of-the-art, non-smoking conference center, the Grand Spa, Cristophe Salon, "CSI: The Experience" and an inviting pool complex featuring the tantalizing daylife of Wet Republic.
Upscale accommodations include The Mansion, an exclusive hotel within the hotel; the luxurious two-story SKYLOFTS at MGM Grand; and The Signature at MGM Grand, a luxury all-suite, non-gaming hotel located adjacent to the main resort.
