Divorce insurance: because you know it’s going to happen

Image

Divorce is a fact of life, nowhere more so than Nevada, with its 14.2 percent divorce rate. So why not hedge your bets? Last month, North Carolina-based SafeGuard Guaranty Corp. began offering “divorce insurance” to cover the costs of a divorce or starting over post-marriage. Premiums can range anywhere from $15.99 to well over $1,000 per month. Sure, it won’t put a positive spin on your marriage, but neither will a prenup, right? Chief executive officer John A. Logan says he’s only sold a handful of plans so far and none in Nevada—yet. Oh, and in case you’re considering gaming the system by getting married and then divorcing to cash in, remember this: Each policy must mature 48 months to pay out. “Go ahead and try, because we’ve already made our money by then,” Logan says.
