The most overused bit of showbiz hype ever might be “You’ll laugh! You’ll cry!” Damned if I didn’t do both at Clint Holmes’ show when he was a headliner at Harrah’s. For starters, it’s impossible not to like the guy. He’s self-deprecating. He’s funny. And, if my wife’s taste is to be trusted, he’s not too bad to look at, either. Oh, almost forgot—he’s a hell of a singer and performer, too. Over the space of a couple of hours, I watched Holmes scat, sing opera, perform his ’70s hit, “Playground in My Mind,” and, most amazingly, make me forget that I’m not that big a fan of scat, opera or “Playground in My Mind.”

Best of all was his tribute to his idol Sammy Davis Jr., including a number from Golden Boy, the Broadway musical that starred Davis in the ’60s. Here’s another showbiz cliché: Holmes is the complete entertainment package.
