“My dreams of becoming Liza Minnelli have come true!” That’s how lo-fi pop princess Bethany Cosentino announced Best Coast’s four-night Cosmopolitan booking on her band’s blog in November. “We are fully prepared to rage and fully confused as to why we have a ‘residency’ in Vegas.” If you’d told us a year ago the hipster-ific LA outfit would land on the Strip to play eight sets in four days, we’d have laughed in your face, too. But that was pre-Cosmopolitan; now, Best Coast’s summery two-minute pop treats should sound right at home inside of-the-moment-focused Book & Stage. The band’s debut album, last July’s Crazy for You, racked up year-end album list honors—No. 39 by Pitchfork, No. 27 by NME, No. 9 by Sound Opinions’ Jim DeRogati—but the recommendation here is to track down some of BC’s ultra-catchy non-LP tracks, namely “When I’m With You,” “Over the Ocean” and “Wish He Was You.” Simplicity’s rarely sounded so sweet.
