- How the media helped the Bellagio bandit (12/22/10)
Two weeks ago, a gunman robbed $1.5 million in chips from a Bellagio craps table. In response, the Bellagio is changing the design of its $25,000 chips. If you’ve got any of the old ones—and you better not!—you have until April 22 to cash ’em in. Maybe the Bellagio is trying to freeze out the robber, or maybe the casino thinks the change will encourage the robber to cash in his 25K chips ASAP. But the most likely result will be this: The robber will never try to cash in his $25,000 chips, and he’ll never be caught. It’s kind of like breaking even, which, in Vegas, isn’t half bad.
