Danielle Kelly comes full circle with new art exhibit

Artist Danielle Kelly has worked in media as diverse as scrap metal and soft fabric.
Danielle Kelly’s installation Be the Man You Want to Marry is more than an interesting approach to space and form through a soft and cuddly medium—fabric. The show traces back to the artist/Weekly art critic’s Downtown Bouse House project, which brought community members together to make a collaborative wall work using mostly scrap material.

Named for Kelly’s fictional, women-led art movement, Bouse House School of Western Arizona, that exhibit centered on a future world in which technology has collapsed and society reuses materials of 20th century consumer culture (with a nod to the tenets of Bauhaus). From that came Blanket, a collaboration between Kelly and a Portland dancer created for the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art’s Time Based Arts Festival. Be the Man You Want to Marry uses those pieces, circling back to the beginning.
