Thumbs up or down for Roger Ebert?
Giving the blow-by-blow of the famous movie critic’s new show

Co-hosts Christy Lemire and Ignatiy Vishnevetsky: Lemire, of the Associated Press, and Vishnevetsky, of Mubi.com and the Chicago Reader, are a bit mismatched, and while they were more than willing to disagree on pretty much every movie, they also seemed to be talking past each other much of the time. They may eventually settle into a nice chemistry, but for now they get a thumbs down.
Werner Herzog as the voice of Roger Ebert: Because of cancer surgery, Ebert lost his ability to speak a few years ago, so his segment was narrated by director Werner Herzog, one of the greatest voices in cinema. I don’t know if they can keep this up each week, but it gets a big thumbs up.
Kim Morgan on classic cinema: Morgan (who writes for MSN and other outlets) is one of the best and most passionate writers about old Hollywood, and her segment on The Third Man was top-notch. I give it a thumbs up and hope to see more.
Overall: Even with a few bumps, it’s great to have a TV show devoted to real cinephilia back on the air. I miss A.O. Scott and Michael Phillips as At the Movies hosts, but I wouldn’t hesitate to give this new version my thumbs up.
