Nightlife news & notes: Duck Sauce, a Playmate takeover and more

As mysteries go, few in the cocktail world rival Fernet-Branca, the Italian spirit whose recipe (rumored to include codeine and St. John’s wort, among other things) has been a well-kept secret and whose flavor has inspired intense obsession and passionate hatred. Try it for yourself on August 1, when Downtown Cocktail Room features the drink at the August edition of its monthly Mixology Mondays event, this time tapping the skills of DCR alum George Sproule. Twenty bucks gets you four Fernet cocktails—if you can handle them.
While you’re Downtown, consider stopping by Bar + Bistro’s new Monday night jazz jam. The new weekly session features students and professors from UNLV, and anyone else with an instrument who feels like joining the fray. Music kicks off at 9 p.m., but jazz, of course, is eternal.
Many a bachelor has headed up to the Palms Playboy Club with dreams of heading down with a centerfold on his arm. Yeah, right. But this Saturday, clubgoers can at least party in the company of Hef’s darlings during the Playmate Takeover, when lovely ladies like Jessica Burciaga, Pennelope Jimenez and Ashley Hobbs host the night. As for leaving with one of them, perhaps you could share the same elevator?
If you haven’t been living under a rock for the past six months, you’ve heard club smash “Barbra Streisand” by super DJ duo Duck Sauce. The track by A-Trak and Armand van Helden has been featured on Glee (during Rachel’s Barbravention) and bumped in just about every club in town. We’re pretty sure the pair will play it themselves at Surrender on August 5, when they bring a duck-themed production to the Encore club. Don’t blame the DJs if you leaving craving Chinese.
