Is soccer the answer to Vegas’ sporting woes?
Wed, Mar 2, 2011 (2:10 p.m.)
And the sport that will soon take Las Vegas by storm is ... soccer? Yep, at least that’s the feeling of Mayor Oscar Goodman, who’s been trying for the last decade to get a pro baseball, basketball or hockey team here. Now that those options seem done for and his days are dwindling, why not court the sport that American audiences only care about every four years? Don’t get us wrong, some markets support the MLS—LA, Philadelphia and Seattle all have fans in the seats—but we just don’t see it happening in a city that has been shunned by every other major league sport and has done a lousy job of supporting its minor league squads. We’re a city that thrives on the unusual, the “only in Vegas”-style entertainment. In other words, goodbye football, hello jai alai, water polo and caber tossing. Hey, gotta start somewhere, right?
