With John Ensign out, beware Sharron Angle

Let’s call this a good news/bad news scenario: In an action that proves he might actually read a newspaper or two, Sen. John Ensign, who hasn’t been able to shake the stigma of his affair and an ongoing Senate ethics investigation, announced this week he won’t seek re-election. As happy as we were to discover that common sense prevails once in a blue moon, we quickly became depressed again: Get ready for more of the Sharron Angle show in 2012. Whether the Tea Party darling, who lost a Senate race to Harry Reid in 2010, runs for Ensign’s seat or for the congressional seat that will be vacant if Dean Heller makes his expected Senate bid, it’ll just mean we have to endure another ultra-right-wing crazyfest, peppered with media dodging, racially insensitive comments and “lemons to lemonade” platitudes for victims of tragedy. Not that we’re dismissing her—she has a prodigious talent for raising money. Heads up, guys: She could actually win this time.
