Cocktails get artsy with the Mixtures iPhone app

These aren’t your normal cocktail photos.
It’s not that you can’t make a drink from a recipe with a simple photo of the cocktail. It’s just that after you spend a minute with the Loud Cloud’s free Mixtures iPhone app, you won’t want to.
The Oakland, California-based creative agency has a crew of artists and illustrators at its disposal, so when Apple announced the iPad a few years ago, it decided to take a stab at self-publishing. How? Well, agency principal Joshua Gorchov says, “cocktails go well with illustrations.”
Indeed they do. Mixtures features 15 classic and modern cocktails, each with a beautiful custom illustration by one of Loud Cloud’s artists. Instead of browsing by liquor or type of drink—there are currently only 15 options, after all—you thumb through the images until you find one that appeals to you. While the drinks—mimosa and Pimm’s cup, for example—are nothing special, the art most certainly is.
“We called it Mixtures because there are different elements that combine together to create something unique,” not because the illustrators mixed up samples while working, Gorchov says. “You have to be sober to be a successful artist.”
