Bar review, from the people that know best

At Caramel lounge last Friday, Boyd Law students met up with the Clark County Bar Association’s New Lawyers Committee to do what young attorneys do best: mingle and drink. They shed their power suits, slipped on jeans and rugby shirts and made the same unfunny “Blackacre” jokes young lawyers have been making for decades. (Confession: Young lawyers have been making the “bar review” joke for decades, too—can’t take credit for that one.)

I spoke with a young attorney named Jay—a self-described “porn lawyer” who told me he once worked out of a “porn house,” a place where the movies were shot. “Where was the house?” I asked. “I can’t disclose that information,” he replied.

Then I met Dave, a young commercial litigator, who said he’d been to court four times this week, on four different matters. That guy earned his drink. Next was Tera, a recent grad now working as a judge’s clerk. “Law school sucked the life out of me,” Tera said. “The only ones who understand that are other lawyers.” And with that, Tera’s group raised their glasses and took another sip.
