Conversation starters: From auto theft to the Sahara

Sahara S

Everybody wins

The recently closed Sahara Hotel and Casino may reopen soon. The proposal includes remodeling the property, getting rid of the roller coaster and adding a beer garden. We applaud the decision against implosion in a city where history is sorely lacking, the additional jobs this would bring back and, of course, another beer venue. They’re like bathrooms. You can never have too many.

Raymundo Pereda

Hide and weak

Raymundo Pereda, a suspect in a 16-year-old California murder investigation, was arrested in Las Vegas after living here more than a decade under an assumed name while working as a carpenter. Pereda joins a distinguished list of guys captured here this year—including deadbeat fathers and child molesters—who thought they could just disappear. Hopefully these arrests are helping to put the word out: Our cops know their sh*t.

Car keys

Bland theft

A car worth $120,000 was stolen at the SEMA automotive show last week. The silver 1964 Chevrolet Impala convertible was stolen right outside the Las Vegas Convention Center before it went on display. According to organizers, this is the first time in SEMA’s history this has happened. And yet, that makes it no less ridiculous. Shouldn’t security be the No. 1 priority at a conference packed with high-end autos?
