In 1992 David Sedaris read his essay, “The Santaland Diaries,” on National Public Radio, simultaneously introducing himself to America and cementing his place in our hearts as one of the prickliest, shrewdest, most wry comic voices ever. How? By walking several humiliating miles in the curly-toed shoes of Crumpet the Elf, a character based on his memories of working at Macy’s as one of Santa’s little helpers.
“The Santaland Diaries” said everything anyone has ever wanted to say about the dark side of Christmas sentimentality, and Joe Mantello’s stage adaptation is a one-man, one-act send-up of a send-up.
Onyx Theatre’s production of it played to sold-out crowds in 2010, and this year’s run of only eight shows will have director Christopher Kenney and star Jamie Morris skewering the rosy-cheeked children, the gifts and good cheer. Because it wouldn’t be the holidays without some good old-fashioned cynicism.
