We love us some dim sum at Henderson’s East Ocean

Farewell, Chang’s Hong Kong Cuisine. I've got a new favorite spot for dim sum: East Ocean Dim Sum & Seafood Restaurant. It’s not because the small plates of hearty Chinese food at East Ocean are a lot better than Chang’s; both are terrific (I’ll give the slight edge to East Ocean). It’s because East Ocean is only five minutes from my house in Henderson, so no more treks across the city for dim sum. Plus, the place is spacious and exceptionally clean.
- 9570 S. Eastern Ave., 567-4800.
- Daily, 10:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m. (dim sum till 3:30 p.m. daily).
All the regular dim sum items are aboard carts here—sui mai, dumplings, har gow, fried turnip, flat rice noodles and Chinese broccoli (an especially generous serving)—and menu standouts include roast duck (juicy and flavorful), fried smelt (plump with just the right amount of saltiness), steamed rice with pork and Chinese sausage wrapped in palm fronds, and seafood chow fun. The service and food temperature can be a little spotty, but that’s the case at every dim sum restaurant, right?
East Ocean is at the former site of Italian restaurant Roma Grill (before that the sushi/seafood buffets Tay-Yo and Makino). Will it stick? Its ballroom-sized dining room is already packed during dim sum hours on weekdays and weekends, though I’ve been there twice for dinner and it hasn’t been busy. The whole, deep-fried sole and sweet-and-sour short ribs were so good, I ordered them again on the second visit.
Chang's Hong Kong Cuisine was previously listed as being in Spring Valley. It is actually located at 4670 South Decatur Blvd., and dim sum is served daily from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
