Sevendust, “Terminator” (1997) A nice slow buildup to a truly monster riff, plus singer Lajon Witherspoon’s mix of smooth crooning and angry insistence.

Avenged Sevenfold, “Beast and the Harlot” (2005) The band’s penchant for piling excess upon excess can be a little overwhelming, but this song is a perfect balance of epic and accessible.
Black Tide, “Warriors of Time” (2008) These teenage metal disciples worship at the altar of the new wave of British heavy metal on their debut, especially on this catchy scorcher.
Taking Dawn, “Fight ’em With Your Rock” (2010) Finally a local band following in Slaughter’s footsteps. With slick guitars and a breakdown featuring chants of “rock!,” this would fit alongside 1988’s hard rock hits.
Hatebreed, “This Is Now” (2003) An awesome fist-pumping anthem that perfectly encapsulates the band’s blend of hardcore and metal and its love for old-school thrash.
Valora, “I Waited for You” (2011) Thanks to powerhouse singer Syd Duran, these California rockers sound like the pop-rock of Kelly Clarkson turned up to 11.
