Forget about forgetting about jazz. Local bassist Tyler Williams teams up with guitarist Dirk K and Grammy award-winning drummer Peter Erskine on Tyler's debut jazz album Hear Me Now. You might have heard Williams in Le Rêve or performing at the Beat. This weekend he performs with K and Erskine at the Clark County Library Theater
We ask him a few questions.
Is jazz your baby? Jazz is probably my favorite overall genre, but I have an eclectic music collection, and truly love many styles of music, from Megadeth to Brad Mehldau.
What inspired the album?My main inspiration came from my own complaining about the lacking jazz scene in Las Vegas. Many great musicians live and work here on the Strip, but the live music scene has had a weird time here. I basically got tired of complaining about it.
Tell me about the songs.Each song sort of has its own story. I think the oldest tune, “Me and Herb,” is from 1995. It was inspired from performing with the great jazz guitarist Herb Ellis at an early age at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. Other tunes are based on typical love songs, or shall I say, frustrations and joy.
