The new ‘Beavis and Butt-Head’: Is It cool or does it suck?
Wed, Oct 26, 2011 (5:57 p.m.)
All grown up. Oh wait, no, they’re not.
MTV’s iconic animated teenage morons Beavis and Butt-Head return with all-new episodes on Thursdays at 10 p.m. starting this week.
Cool:
The duo now gets to watch shows like Jersey Shore and 16 and Pregnant in addition to the occasional music video, and their observations on vapid MTV programming are pretty hilarious.
Everything is pretty much the same in the duo’s world, with familiar supporting characters who haven’t changed a bit. It’s like we never left the suburban wasteland of Highland.
Creator Mike Judge is still willing to take seemingly one-note jokes and push them to surreal and very funny levels.
Sucks:
The narrative portions are still sort of hit-and-miss compared to the pop-culture commentary.
Judge’s voice has gotten a bit deeper and rougher over the years, and hearing the main characters speak slightly differently takes some getting used to.
As great as it is to have all the well-known elements intact, a little more innovation and creativity would be welcome.
Overall:
After 14 years away, Beavis and Butt-Head are still pretty cool.
