Returning shows you should be watching
Fringe (Fox, Fridays, 9 p.m., season premiere September 23) Last season’s cliffhanger on this intricate sci-fi drama erased main character Peter Bishop from existence—how are they going to resolve that one?
Community (NBC, Thursdays, 8 p.m., season premiere September 22) John Goodman and Michael K. Williams will have recurring roles on the third season of this genre-pushing sitcom, which mixes metatextual weirdness with strong character development.
Parks and Recreation (NBC, Thursdays, 8:30 p.m., season premiere September 22) The addition of Rob Lowe and Adam Scott to the cast last season brought even more depth to this heartfelt and warm comedy about Midwestern city employees.
Nucky's back and badder than ever.
Boardwalk Empire (HBO, Sundays, 9 p.m., season premiere September 25) Things heat up for Atlantic City gangster Nucky Thompson in this opulent drama’s second season, which looks to be more violent and more intense.
Beavis and Butt-head (MTV, Thursdays, 10 p.m., season premiere October 27) The animated dumbasses are back after 14 years off the air, as dim and self-centered as ever, ready to rock out and make fun of all of MTV’s latest vapid programming.

The Office (NBC, Thursdays, 9 p.m., season premiere September 22) Out: Steve Carell as Dunder Mifflin boss Michael Scott. In: James Spader as aggressive new company CEO Robert California.

Two and a Half Men (CBS, Mondays, 9 p.m., season premiere September 19) Out: Charlie Sheen, whose character will reportedly be killed off. In: Ashton Kutcher as Internet billionaire Walden Schmidt.
CSI (CBS, Wednesdays, 10 p.m., season premiere September 21) Out: Laurence Fishburne as the unit’s stern boss. In: Ted Danson as a more playful head of the CSI team.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (NBC, Wednesdays, 10 p.m., season premiere September 21) Out: Christopher Meloni as Det. Elliott Stabler. In: Kelli Giddish and Danny Pino as new detectives on the unit.
That's Hugh Laurie hospitalized because he misses Lisa Edelstein so damn much.
House (Fox, Mondays, 9 p.m., season premiere October 3) Out: Lisa Edelstein as House’s boss/lover Lisa Cuddy. In: Odette Annable and Charlyne Yi as new doctors for House to berate.
