SlutWalk Las Vegas sends a powerful anti-rape message

SlutWalk Las Vegas marched onto the Strip Saturday night to stares—plenty of stares, gawking even—confusion, applause and cheers of support. Anti-rape signs read, “Don’t tell us how to dress. Tell men not to rape,” “A ho can say no” and the evening’s motto: “What happens in Vegas still requires consent.”
A woman muttered, “Disgusting,” as the crowd filtered by. I wondered why she deemed disgusting a crowd of “sluts”—sex workers, activists, hard-working mothers and fathers, students, community leaders and LGBT members—coming together for an anti-rape march. Rape is disgusting. Blaming the victim is disgusting. Maybe, hopefully, that resonates with her someday.
Like with other SlutWalks around the world, beginning in Toronto after a police officer said women are safer if they don’t dress like sluts, Saturday’s walk down Las Vegas’ drunken, hyper-sexualized Boulevard came with a simple message: It doesn’t matter what we wear, what we do for a living or how many drinks we’ve had; rape is unacceptable.
