This time of year, mountain bikers flock to Las Vegas for the mild weather, cinematic views and gnarly singletrack. Bootleg Canyon has eaten many a rider alive, but some of America’s best will be on hand this weekend, vying for a cash purse in USA Cycling’s first downhill qualifier for the 2012 Gravity Nationals.
Called Reaper Madness, the event will have amateurs, experts and pros racing against the clock in Downhill, Super Downhill and Open Chainless categories. Pros Mitch Ropelato and Mikey Sylvestri, who took first and second in Downhill last year, will be back to shred.
Locals should line the course to watch the spectacle and root for hometown heroes, including a 9-year-old wunderkind taking on the Super D. Celebrate with the winners, then hit nearby Boulder City for all the victory beer you can drink.
