Spencer Patterson’s strange brush with Bob Seger

Spencer Patterson says if you see this at a Bob Seger concert, you’re too close — or he is.

It happens at almost every rock concert: The singer wanders over to one side of the stage and spends a little time with the fans over there. Last Friday at Mandalay Bay, I was in that section, wishing I wasn’t.

Seger came over during the second song and just kinda … hung out. He smiled and thrust his arms straight up in the air a couple of times. And then he looked right at me—seated, surrounded by standers who were dancing and clapping and snapping photos. Seger stared deep into my eyes, surely sensing my ambivalence, to the singer, the song, the overall scene. And then he moved on.

I doubt he actually cared, and considering how packed the place was at $75-$125 a head, why would he? As for me, our awkward interaction was the most interesting part of my night, which gives you some idea how I felt about the rest of the show.
