Indie rock aficionados packed Beauty Bar Saturday night for a jangly, intimate affair that felt like the best little living room concert never held. Of note were Tempe-based openers Dry River Yacht Club, whose firecracker lead singer and gypsy orchestra—featuring both bassoon and tuba—delivered a rowdy set of Balkan-rock that gives fellow Southwesterners Beirut a run for their money.

Headliners He’s My Brother She’s My Sister had the Downtown crowd downing drinks and rolling up sleeves to hit the dancefloor, clapping, spinning and yelping along to the group’s self-described brand of “cabaret blues.” But as compelling as the LA quintet is to listen to, they’re equally captivating to watch: Singer Rob Kolar managed to kick a bass drum behind him while helming the mic and guitar; percussionist Lauren Brown beat a pair of toms while tap-dancing in a pair of wooden clogs; and bassist Oliver Newell all but tangoed with his green-and-violet hand-painted upright. HMBSMS rounded out the set with the boozy, mischievous “Tales That I Tell.” Audience members chanted along, arm-in-arm, to an unaccompanied rendition of the chorus—an apt ending to an evening worthy of being retold.
