With so many great art exhibits opening in Las Vegas next week, we can celebrate the fact that Orlando Montenegro’s Transfiguration Phase opens this Friday at Winchester Cultural Center, giving us a chance to breathe.

If you missed Montenegro’s exhibit at Left of Center Gallery back in 2010, now is a good time to check out his mixed-media works on panel and refreshing embrace of old-school abstraction. The atmospheric compositions, designed to explore “the body’s relationship to its environment and to the landscape,” mingle organic form and topographical references, with an almost three-dimensional quality created by overlaying bold colors on paler hues.

The Nicaraguan-born artist earned his BFA at UNLV and his MFA from the University of Arizona, then returned to Las Vegas, where he teaches drawing at UNLV.
