No one is going to remember To Rome With Love as a highlight of Woody Allen’s European period (that honor goes to more serious efforts Match Point and Vicky Cristina Barcelona), but it’s a pleasant diversion that’s neither as strained as Allen’s worst Euro-comedy (2006’s Scoop) nor as endearing as last year’s Midnight in Paris. Like Paris, Rome is a sort of magical-realist fable, and it intercuts four unrelated stories that all take place in the gorgeous Italian city. The segment featuring Jesse Eisenberg as a young man torn between his stable girlfriend (Greta Gerwig) and her flighty friend (an excellent Ellen Page), while he gets advice from an older man (Alec Baldwin) who may or may not be a future version of himself, is the strongest, but all four have their charms. Those charms are modest, and sometimes the various stories fit together awkwardly, but Rome is an enjoyable side trip all the same.
