Conversation starters: A brothel owner announces his candidacy for public office and more

      A man who says he was attacked and beaten in his driveway by a Las Vegas Metro officer will receive a $100,000 settlement. Did we mention he videotaped the entire thing? Mitchell Crooks, who also videotaped two officers beating a 16-year-old boy in Inglewood, California, in 2002, has got it figured out: Whenever possible, get video. If police departments won’t police themselves, sometimes the public has to step up.

      The firm 2.0

      David Amesbury, a Las Vegas defense attorney who took a plea deal in a federal homeowners association corruption probe, was found dead of an apparent hanging last weekend. And just last week, Nancy Quon, a construction defect lawyer and a second defendant in the case, was found dead in her bathtub. Authorities don’t suspect foul play in either death. Maybe we’ve seen way too many John Grisham thrillers, but it’s hard to view this as just coincidence. All we can say is, next time you get an HOA notice in the mail, get it taken care of—fast.

      Strange bedfellows

      Lance Gilman, owner of the Mustang Ranch brothel in Storey County, has announced his candidacy for that county’s commissioner. We should point out that he’s also the sales and marketing director of the 107,000-acre Tahoe Reno Industrial Center, and that he’s brought more than 100 companies and 6,000 jobs there, so he sounds more than qualified. And seriously, is there anything more Nevada than a brothel owner running for office? This guy seems a shoo-in.
