In the age of gods and monsters, were there really shaky-cams, digital creatures and 3D debris flying at the camera? Perhaps Wrath of the Titans—a sequel to a remake (2010’s Clash of the Titans) that nobody needed—would have been better with latex and stop-motion effects, veering into enjoyable camp. As of now, this story of Perseus (Sam Worthington), who must navigate a lengthy and complex plot to rescue his father, Zeus (Liam Neeson), and stop the giant, fiery Kronos from rampaging the Earth, is more sloth than wrath. Along the way, characters must remind each other what’s going on, and actors must rouse themselves and remember to act, though it’s possible that the flesh-and-blood stars have even less personality than the computerized beasties. Coming from the director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and Battle Los Angeles, this one is at least less bombastic and aggressively stupid than the prior remake, but also far less ridiculous than the 1981 original.
