Henderson Symphony Orchestra brings new life to another Chaplin classic

The Henderson Symphony Orchestra’s live musical accompaniment to Charlie Chaplin’s classic 1931 silent comedy City Lights was one of the best movie events of last year, and the orchestra will give the same treatment to Chaplin’s Modern Times this week. Released in 1936, Modern Times was Chaplin’s final silent film and the final appearance of his iconic Little Tramp character. The movie features the Tramp having trouble adjusting to technological developments in the workplace, a subject that resonated with audiences during the Great Depression.
Chaplin’s estate in Paris provided the Henderson Symphony Orchestra with a 35mm print of the film, which will be projected above the musicians as they perform the score that Chaplin composed himself. And if audiences are lucky, conductor Taras Krysa might just take the stage in costume as Chaplin, as he did last year.
