John Donne’s poem “No Man Is an Island” might flicker within visitors to Relative Perspectivesat the Clark County Government Center this month. The photographic installations by Javier Sanchez and Marlene Siu encapsulate the connectivity between people, even strangers, despite age differences and varying backgrounds.
In Sanchez’s work, the strength of the message lives in the keen arrangement of hundreds of portraits of Las Vegas residents. There is no “I” when looking at the headshots placed side by side, some enlarged and segmented so they’re viewed through a portrait to more images behind. Mirrors reflect your own image and those of the portraits behind you, enforcing the idea of our communal existence and influence
Siu’s candid vignettes of scenes and people, arranged compartmentally in boxes of an architectural structure, allow us to be voyeurs of others’ daily lives and activities—and recognize our collective stories in them.
