Those harmonies! The lush vocal tapestry that Dusty Sunshine’s four singers—Megan Wingerter, Summer Soll, Chani Riiell and Heidi Guinn—produce has always been intoxicating. Anchored by the tight rhythm tandem of Courtney Carroll (drums) and Jason Aragon (bass), Dusty’s roots music showed promise from the Vegas band’s inception.
Now, the group has taken a big step forward on its new EP, Deer Paw, a six-song collection dedicated to lost loved ones. And it’s the best-sounding record I’ve heard come out of this scene.
Dusty’s newfound maturity was evident onstage Sunday. Complex and twangy instrumentation mixed perfectly with the vocal overlays on “Jailbird” and “Break Your Bones.” The harmonies still soared during the vocal breakdown on album (and live) standout “Babygirl,” teasing you and leaving you wanting more.
I’m not sure how these Americana sirens weren’t born in the Ozarks, but here in Vegas, we should be proud to call them our own.
