Next week, Downtown is getting a new dog. American Coney Island, "home of the iconic Detroit Coney Dog" and a fabled restaurant that has appeared on Food Network's Food Feuds and Travel Channel's Food Wars, is set to open its first location outside of Michigan at the D on Fremont Street on October 10.

American Coney Island is the oldest family-owned business in Detroit, according to today's press announcement. Founder Gus Keros coined the phrase "Coney Dog" when introducing the specially seasoned sausage in 1917. The famous dog is topped with family secret recipe chili sauce, mustard and chopped onions and served in a warm steam bun, and now you don't have to travel to Detroit to get one. "American Coney Island is such an iconic food staple in Detroit and there is a reason that Detroiters are so crazy about it," Derek Stevens, the D's owner, said in the statement. "We're excited to introduce our guests to the classic combination."

Stevens is a Detroit native, which is one of the reasons why Fitzgeralds was recently rechristened as the D after his company assumed control of the Fremont Street Experience casino and hotel. The addition of the new 24-hour hot dog joint is part of the property's transformation, which also includes remodeled rooms and suites, a renovated casino floor, and the addition of the new Longbar.
