Local artist Su Limbert brings dreamy new work to Blackbird

If you missed artist Su Limbert’s storybook window installation at the Contemporary Arts Center in February—or if you’ve been aching for more of her narrative vintage imagery—you’ll get a chance to dip back into her allegorical and nostalgic world in new exhibit Into the Wild at Blackbird Studios.
Limbert’s solo show takes off where the installation All Is Full of Love left off, with the local artist focusing on the complexities of vulnerability and empowerment amid wonderment and innocence. Dreamlike and idyllic, the illustrated woodcuts, hand-cut china and representational paintings feature a young girl testing, confronting and trying on her new self, finding kinship, safety and power in her developing persona.
Limbert, who has long collected vintage children’s books, is an exemplary illustrator whose work is wrapped in a sentimental tone and sense of adventure as ’50s-era innocence meets a natural world of forests and animals. It’s an adventure worth exploring.
