Debating the pros and cons of Nevada’s new stamp

Nevada Earthscapes Stamp

A series of stamps called “Earthscapes” using images taken by satellites or aircraft? Cool! Images of crops in Kansas, Mount St. Helens in Washington and a glacier in Alaska? Very cool. Nevada’s image of … a bunch of homes? WTF, Postal Service? We couldn’t be represented by a shot of the Strip, Red Rock or Mount Charleston? I realize part of the series depicts urban landscapes, but seriously, that’s one of the least interesting things about Nevada. Lazy, guys, just lazy. –Ken Miller

Finally, our own modern-day sprawling Levittown-in-the-desert gets a little love. The portrait of suburbia, aptly titled “residential subdivision,” is a gorgeous composition of our suburban sameness. The bird’s-eye view of tidy little homes and their backyard pools, aligned neatly along fat, curvy roads, is no geothermal spring, cherry orchard or highway interchange (featured on the other stamps). But it’s home—and a fantastically iconic depiction of 21st century Las Vegas, something deserving of a little less aesthetic derision. –Kristen Peterson
