Revolution premieres September 17.

The Details

Revolution
Three stars
Mondays, 10 p.m., NBC

There have been a lot of disappointing high-concept serialized shows since the huge success of Lost, and NBC’s Revolution, from Lost executive producer J.J. Abrams and Supernatural creator Eric Kripke, may turn out to be another one. The first episode has a lot of flaws but also a lot of promise, and could end up being an expansive epic like Lost, or a missed opportunity like The Event and FlashForward. Set in a world where electricity has ceased to function, Revolution resembles FlashForward in that it starts with an intriguing premise but gets bogged down in the everyday storytelling details. The first episode features some flat characters and unimpressive action sequences, but it ends with a cliffhanger that (like FlashForward usually did) will have you eager to see what happens next. Those subsequent episodes will be where the show either builds into something spectacular or just crashes and burns.
