The Details

Silversun Pickups

September 14, the Joint

My last Silversun Pickups show—two years ago in this same room—spoiled me rotten. That night, the LA foursome enveloped me with wave after gloriously loud wave of floor-shaking sound. Tonight, everything’s different. And I think I know why.

Bassist Nikki Monninger isn’t here. She’s back home, preparing to give birth to twins. So tonight is—as far as I can figure—the Pickups’ first-ever performance without her. Sarah Negahdari of fellow SoCal outfit The Happy Hollows is in Monninger’s spot (Silversun frontman Brian Aubert terms tonight’s lineup the “Sarahsun Pickups”). And while Negahdari might be playing all the right notes, her bass is mixed down way so low I can’t tell. How about showing some confidence, guys?

I want to feel the low end, not strain to hear it. So I’m disappointed. Ah well. I’ll always have my memories from last time, and those will never stop ringing in my ears.
