Lawmakers are just like us—in debt

It’s like that “Stars Are Just Like Us” section of Us Weekly: According to a recent report from the Center for Responsive Politics, dozens of federal lawmakers, the same people we associate with a higher class of living, are carrying massive amounts of debt from ... wait for it ... student loans! According to the CRP, 46 members of Congress—22 Democrats and 24 Republicans—owe between $1.8 million and $4.3 million in student-loan debt. (Members of Congress are allowed to report the debt in ranges.)
Furthermore, one of Nevada’s congressmen, Republican Joe Heck, is on that list, currently carrying between $50,001 and $100,000 in debt.
No word yet from Heck’s camp on how close he is to paying off that monster, but it certainly raises the question of where Heck will stand on President Obama’s plan to change the Higher Education Act so that affordability and value are included in determining which colleges receive certain types of federal aid.
