You didn’t know? The Golden Gate finished its million-dollar renovations

Golden Gate, which opened downtown in 1906, celebrated its first renovation and expansion in 50 years on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012.
It’s easy to miss something in the constant stream of Downtown hype, especially if it’s not tagged with “East Fremont” or “Zappos” labels. You know about the upgrades at the Plaza and the D, but the oldest casino in the state, the Golden Gate, recently put the finishing touches on a $15 million project that includes a shiny new Main Street porte cochere and hotel lobby, 16 new luxury suites and a swanky high-limits room. Plus, the iconic shrimp cocktail that helped make the Golden Gate famous is still available at Du-par’s 24-hour restaurant, until a new deli opens later this year. This shined-up classic is worth another look.
