The Details

Society Cafe
Encore, 248-3463.
Sunday-Thursday, 7 a.m.-11 p.m.; Friday & Saturday, 7 a.m.-11:30 pm.

Things have been running smoothly at Encore's Society Cafe since chef Bryan Forgione took over, as the open-all-day restaurant continues to churn out tastefully refined comfort food. The pastrami hash, a regular on the breakfast and weekend brunch menus, is a great example of this kitchen's slick-but-satisfying approach. Far from a typical greasy diner-style hash where all the components lump together, this version combines tender roasted potatoes, bits of sauteed onions and peppers, fresh rosemary, decadent chunks of juicy, smoky meat and two beautifully poached eggs.

The house-made pastrami makes all the difference. Its rich flavor and perfect texture proves Forgione is taking his time crafting the right ingredients at Society, right down to the last delicious detail. You can also order this majestic meat on rye with pickled vegetables at lunchtime, but there's something special about the way the egg yolks blend with this cured, smoked beef and well-spiced potatoes. You'll need quite a bit of strong coffee or maybe even an extra shot of horseradish in your Bloody Mary to contrast this killer dish.
