The rare rainy day in Las Vegas comes with the inevitable weather feature photo hunt. So last Friday I drove toward Downtown, hoping for some colorful characters out and about. I was pulling off the highway on Casino Center Drive, just past the old train station and Friday farmers’ market, when I saw Walter Thomas Jr. Some would say that his job was demeaning, dressing up like a banana and standing on the street corner, but Walter didn’t see it that way. He told me he was homeless, so whatever work he could find was a blessing. “I’m happy to help out,” he said, holding up the sign a little higher.
