Bar Exam

Lead Photo Breakfast at the bar

C. Moon Reed | Thu, Apr 16, 2009 (midnight)

The nice thing about a crowded bar is that even if you came alone, you’re surrounded by friends. In this case, my new “friends” were a class of people I’d never before seen: the Earlyrisers.

Lead Photo A bar for mom

C. Moon Reed | Thu, Apr 2, 2009 (midnight)

To the untrained eye, Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon is Old Vegas. Short, squat and brown, it faces off against Caesars, Bellagio and Bally’s like Tonto to the Flamingo’s Lone Ranger.

Lead Photo A dalliance with suburbia

C. Moon Reed | Thu, Feb 26, 2009 (midnight)

Sweet, sweet suburbia, how I’ve missed you. That’s what I thought as I pulled open the giant letter “V” on the door of Vintner Grill.

Lead Photo Merry in the face of Fear

C. Moon Reed | Thu, Feb 19, 2009 (midnight)

When I first read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, I felt the smug satisfaction of “getting it.” I went so far as to assume Circus Circus was nothing more than a product of Thompson’s brain on drugs. Imagine my surprise when I discovered it was real.

Lead Photo What’s inside?

C. Moon Reed | Thu, Jan 29, 2009 (midnight)

I fell in love with the sign for the Offramp Lounge years before I considered stepping inside. Located at the eastbound Charleston exit of the 95, the marquee provides entertainment for passersby.

Lead Photo Chance encounter

C. Moon Reed | Thu, Jan 15, 2009 (midnight)

It was a Dark and Stormy night: rum and ginger beer served over ice in red plastic cups. But by the time Emily and I reached the bar at the Grand Lux Café in the Venetian, the Dark and Stormies were history.

Lead Photo Bonding with a Bud

I begin looking through the offerings at the concession stand. For once, I’m not looking for Milk Duds or popcorn. I’m looking for beer.

Lead Photo The spicy taste of Mexicotown, Egypt

Matthew Scott Hunter | Thu, Oct 30, 2008 (midnight)

It’s a testament to the power of alcohol that I’m able to stomach a standard lime margarita on my way out. But the lure of T&T’s adjoining frozen daiquiri bar, just outside the restaurant, is irresistible.

Lead Photo Relax, Comrade

Matthew Scott Hunter | Thu, Sep 18, 2008 (midnight)

I’ve never known much about Russian culture. In college, our studies focused almost exclusively on Europe, so most of what I know about the former superpower was gleaned from the film The Hunt for Red October (and that Russian guy had a Scottish accent).

Lead Photo Clone pours

Matthew Scott Hunter | Thu, Sep 4, 2008 (midnight)

The Grape is a welcome addition to this corner of Town Square. It’s a place for good wine, good conversation and good gripes about how Anakin and Count Dooku shouldn’t have fought in The Clone Wars movie because in Episode III, they clearly indicated that they hadn’t seen each other since Episode II!… Of course, it’s entirely possible that we’ll be the only ones to make use of The Grape for that last purpose.

Lead Photo Mic me

Matthew Scott Hunter | Thu, Aug 21, 2008 (midnight)

I’ve tagged along on karaoke nights before, but none quite like this. Sure, there’s the usual database of 70,000 songs (including a large Korean selection), and there’s the requisite private room with dual microphones, but between the couch and the screen that will inevitably broadcast the lyrics of Elvis Presley and The Righteous Brothers, there’s an elevated stage with a stripper pole.

Lead Photo The boonies are good enough

Matthew Scott Hunter | Thu, Jul 24, 2008 (midnight)

The Silverton Hotel & Casino has an off-the-beaten-path sort of feel to it, which is odd considering it’s just off of Las Vegas Boulevard—an exceptionally well-beaten path.

Lead Photo Out with the new, in with the newer

Matthew Scott Hunter | Thu, Jul 10, 2008 (midnight)

In case you didn’t notice from the dozens of enormous cranes littering the skyline, Las Vegas is a city obsessed with the new. Where once there was nothing, there must now be something, and where once there was something, there must now be something new. The old must be redesigned, reinvented and rebuilt. In some cities, places become more precious with age. They become antiques. In Las Vegas, they just become antiquated.
